Abstinence is the complete stop in said addiction.
Recovery is any progress being made about the addiction. You could be doing less, doing health things in addition to the drugs that might make it less harmful, etc.

I’d say abstinence is removing yourself completely from your addiction. That includes people and places that remind you of drugs.
Recovery is learning to live again. Getting your life back. Finding yourself again. Living without your addiction.
