Prescription Drug Abuse vs. Hard Drug Abuse(heroin, coke, lsd)? Is there really a difference?

Question by Nadia S: Prescription Drug Abuse vs. Hard Drug Abuse(heroin, coke, lsd)? Is there really a difference?
As I examine the previous generation as supposed to mine(I’m 22), I notice some differences. One thing that stands out to me is the difference in drug abuse. We all hear the sad stories of the rock star who was a drug addict and overdosed. You always ask yourself how they may have come to such a point where they depended so heavily on a substance. Heres the thing, previous generations abused the harder drugs. The coke, lsd, heroine, crack, meth. The kind of drugs that are illegal and have horrible consequences. Nowadays, we are seeing prescription drug abuse rampant here in the States. A good portion of these abusers are teens, college students, and other young people. I ask myself the same question: how did they get to a point where they depend so much on a substance? Heres the tricky thing though: these things are prescribed by a doctor. This could lead someone to think that abusing them is not so bad since it came from someone who went to medical or pharmacy school. I’m a college student myself and I could tell you that there definitely people on my campus who are definitely too dependent on prescription drugs. One that comes to mind is Adderall. It has created such a problem on college campuses. Some students don’t feel like they could get through a day of classes without it, but once they are off it they experience withdrawal symptoms. This is a very powerful drug, much like most psych medication. I’m afraid there will be those in my generation who will grow to be drones, unable to get through a day or face life’s reality without their pills. What really makes that any different from someone who can’t enjoy life without snorting or shooting up?

There is absolutely no difference what so ever. Just because people get thier prescriptions from a licesed medical doctor really makes them no different than the person who get thier fix from a ” street pharmacist” if thier taking the meds in excess to what the perscription states. Abuse and overuse is just that no matter what the substance.Think of it in comparison-adderall a.k.a amphetamine salts is only a molecule and a prescription away from being methamphetamine…opiates are nothing more than a legal way of doing heroin…for God’s sake methadone is used to treat the addiction of both. What a lot of people don’t see or understand is that just because your doctor prescribes it doesn’t mean it’s safe. Let somebody overuse thier script of oxycodone or oxycontin and run out…total withdrawl symptoms-feeling like they have the flu, nausea, diarrhea…or like you said running out of thier adderall, people get depressed, and cranky to the point of even getting aggressively angry..and those who run out of thier xanex if prescribed for long enough they will go into a seizure…so long story short no, there is no difference, it’s just people have a hard time seeing the danger of something so freely given to them by thier doctor, who is after all the one whose supposed to be taking care of thier health.
